A COUNTY AREA.
THE MOUNT PLEASANT DISTRICT. TO BE REMOVED FROM SUMNER. A commission appointed to inquire Lite a petition that an area of about 026 acres, including the Mount Pleasant Settlement, should be removed from the Sumner Borough to the Hentiicote County, has unanimously recommended to his Excellency the Governor-General that the petition should be granted. Tlie commission, which consisted of Messrs S. E. M* Car thy, S.M.. H. 1). M. Haszard. and D. Puliar, states in its report:-- “Tlie Heatlicote County Council, though notified, was not represented, but intimated that if the prayer of the petitioners was granted, the county was favourable to the inclusion of the area in question within the county boundaries. Most of the area is purely rural land. A considerable portion is very broken and unsuitable for residential purposes. Tlie area is subdivided into sections ranging for tinmost part from three acres to 100 acres; it adjoins the eastern boundary of the Heatlicote County. If the area is severed it will not prejudicially affect the working of tlie borough of Sumner or the Heatlicote County. It is true public utilities are in progress in the borough of Sumner which are capable of being extended to this area. The petitioners will not, however, be participants in these benefits for many years to come. When the time comes for the reinclusion of the area within t,he boundaries of the borough, the necessary steps can he taken to that end. Fn the meantime the petitioners are receiving only infinitesimal benefits from the borough activities. There are Come special borough loans to which the petitioners and their successors in title will have to contribute their quota of interest, even ir excluded.”
