OTIRA TUNNEL.
“TRAINS BY CHRISTMAS.** The chance that Public Works Department trains might be running through the Arthur’s Pass Tunnel by Christmas time was mentioned at a meeting of the, Progress League executive last evening. Mr A. G. Henderson said that the Prime Minister had said that he 1 thought it possible, assuming that electric locomotives were running, to make makeshift arrangements before Christmas for carrying passengers through the tunnel, it was believed that a gon- < ral f erviee would be in operation in fifteen months’ time. “No interruptions occurred at the tunnel during February.” -aid Mr Henderson. “ Progress is being made at the rate of one chain or one and a half chains a week, according to the nature of the ground. There is up material danger of delay in the carrying out of the work. At the time of the Prime Minister’s visit, about fourteen chains of top heading work and perhaps twenty-four chains of concreting remained to be done.”
