ROWING NOTES.

KAIAPOI NORTHERN REGATTAS. (By “ RIPPLE/’) There is still a good deal of slackness on the river, on account of the break made by the holidays, but next week the crows’ training should again bo in full swing. There is a tendency to look over the Kaiapoi regatta toward the northern and southern regattas, and it is possible that training for Kaiapoi will suffer to a certain extent as the result. The C.R.C. is experiencing difficulty in arranging for their men to get away at the time of the championship meeting. but so'far it seems fairly definite that the junior four will bo able to compete at Wellington and Picton, anti the maidens will quite possibly be there also. Nothing definite can be said about the youths. Spooner aud Robertson, the maiden doubles, will not go north, it is said. This seems a pity, as Spooner has shown specially good The youths’ four have been taken in hand by Mr Bert Ayers. At present they arc doing only tubbing, but they will probably be on to slide work early next week. Tho maiden four have been slightly reconstmeted. Parson (2 ) being unable to make a trip north. Hewer will take charge, Bevan going back to 1. The juniors have not yet got- going, owing to tlie nbsence of members of the crew. They will commence training under the care of Air John Foller. | They will compete in both junior events at Picton if they are. able to get away. Champ . and Adkins. Union’s two Lief ties, are devoting their energies to Rest and Best boats, in view of the northern regattas. Although they are fairly rough m present, they are getting a good deal of pace. They have the strength, hut must learn more of the science of the thing. K Velvin, who rowed for Union some years ago, has returned from Wanganui to Christchurch, aud was out in the blue and white last night. He should considerably strengthen Union. He will represent the elu}> at tho Kaiapoi regatta with Dyer in tho junior double sculls. "Wilson and Mercer were the selected crew, lmt owing to Wilson having strained himself they have had to stand down. M'Lean and Kirk, Union’s youths' double sculls and pair oar crew, should give a good account of themselves, as they are rowing much better than they did at Lyttelton. Grenfell and Ellis arc going particularly well in the pairs, but- in tho double acu 11s they are not too good. Grenfeil over-reaches, and Ellis is not bright enough with his shoulder work. Nothing has yet boon settled as to Avon’s representation at the northern regattas. If they get their Best and Best four, which is under construction, in time, they will go north. The alternative is a fairly sure haul at the Dunedin regatta, on February 31. At this regatta the prize money amounts to £7O. ;%The conditions arc the same as last year’s, except that all the fours will bo rowed over a mile and a half course, instead of the senior fours being the only mile and a half course, as it was last yoar. Challenges have Won received as follows:—From L. Withers and G. Goodall for the maiden pairs at Kaiapoi; from W. E. Garrett and H. O. Whitfield and F. V- Horne and R. A. Nightingale, for the maiden pairs and senior pairs respectively, at Dunedin. The half-yearly meeting of the C.R.C. will be held to-night. The club captain says lie hopes that members will ibow live interest in their club by rolling up in good numbers. The C.R.C. have picked three crews for their club trial fours (Cowlishaw Cup) : S. Dalton (stroke), S. Hood, R. Batchelor, S. Ashton. H. E. Otley (stroke), C. Elam. R. Harcombo, C- S. Smith. D. Gunn (stroke), C. Edgar, M- Johnson, F. H. Vincent. The race will be rowed about the middle of February, over a mile course. Avon’s club fours were started on Monday. Results : First heat—CJ. Keys beat L. Harwell easily; second heal - R. M’Culloch beat I/. Barber- a good race for half a mile, then M’Culloch drew away and won easily; third heat—G. Young beat P. Kirton by a length after an exciting race. Tn the semi-final Keys easily defeated Young. The final resulted in a wifi for Keys against M’Culloch. Keys was fortunate in having a well-balanced crew. In tho body of tbo boat were two now members, who should be prominent in the future if they fulfil the promise that they now show-
