Nominations in connection with the impending general elections resulted in thirteen members being returned unopposed, including ton of the new South African Party candidates, of whom one formerly was labour, one independent and four unionist- Mr Merriman and General Hertzog had no opposition. Many three-cornered contests between the South. African party, Nationalists ami Labour will be fought. General Hertzog, replying to a question at a campaign meeting whether tlio Opposition leaders should attend the Imperial Conference, declared that if invited he would attend out of courtesy, hut he would not participate in the deliberations. The Nationalists, lie said, have nothing to do with Imperial closer union, nor do they ad mil the right of such conference to bind them.
