Bail was granted as lief oreFALSE PRETENCES. William Sclioles, alias Quezon, alias Reed, alias Thorne, alias Robertson, pleaded guilty to a charge of having, at Christchurch, with intent to defraud, obtained on September 36 tho sum of £7 from Alary Ellen Harding hv means of a. valueless cheque on the Bank of Australasia. Christchurch. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. LYTTELTON, (Before Mr F. G. Norton. J.P.. and Air F. Knight, J.P.) One first, offender was fined for drunkenness 20s, in default forty-eiglit hours’ imprisonment. Thomas Keenan, charged with being absent from his ship, the s.s. Opawa, on January 10 and 11 without leave, was convicted and sentenced to. seven days’ imprisonment, ordered to pay expenses, and to be placed on board the ship prior to the vessel’s departure from Lyttelton.
