THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—While perusing your paper of the 11th ult.. I came upon a letter re Cathedral choir, by “ Parent,” which I wish to take exception to. I wish respectfully to point out that the system of punishment adopted by the choirmaster is beneficial both immediately and ultimately to all well-bred boys. The choirmaster is essentially a disciplinarian, and is not that what we want to-day P During my six years’ connection with the choir 1 have never cither seen or heard anything in the shape of “tyranny.” The justice meted out to us boys was not such as to degrade us in any way. Lack of manliness, my friend, is not the result of flogging, but of its absence. The application of the proverbial “Spare the rod, etc.” is isfcill possible. Chrisl- - is incompatible with the absence of discipline, which absence does not involve humility or nobility.—l am, etc., H.F.A. Christchurch, September 14. (This correspondence is now closed.— Ed., “Star.”)
