SOUTHLAND NOTES.

(Special to the "Star.”) INVERCARGILL, September 3. Fine weather has been experienced miring the current week, with the result that local trainers have been giving their charges strong work for the lirst time. The trotting mentors are not so fortunate, however, the' day track being hardly in a, fit state for speeding up. At tho annual mooting of the Riverton Racing Club this week, Dr 0. H. Gordon was elected president. Tho defeated candidate, Dr Trotter, has held the position for a number of years. The past season was the most successtul in the history of tho club, from a financial point of view. There were record totalisator and cate returns, whilo nearly £SOO was cleared by fanning operations on tho club’o property. Redskins has been taken up again by P. T. Hogan, after a spell, and ho is almost ready to undergo strong worn. After a lengthy spell Centimetre (brother to Catena) has also rejoined tlutellorke’s Drift Lodge establishment. Gnlma, by the way, lias recovered from tho injuries she sustained in tho Trial Hurdle Handicap at the Grand National meeting, and is now doing good work again. Trainer G. M’Leau has two useful novices in his string. They are a shapely four-year-old mare by Adjudge rs Crawley, and a throe-year-old W niton Stakes candidate, by ViceAdmiral—Lucky Girl, by Calibre— Britoness. The former is a very nice mare, but tho latter is backward in condition. has also takon up jumpers' Frog and Glousponge M while Mcttlcdrift looks nearly roadv to race. Moulin Rouge, Mr W. T. HazleiVs W inton Stakes nomination, has made her appearance on the tracks, followmg on a lengthy period of road work, the daughter ot Kilbroney—Direoloins is a very attractive filly, having furnished into excellent shape sine!© last season. Tho brother to Brnckeniield, a big gelding by Bomform—Gargaron, auotlicr of Mr Hazlett’s novices, hagrown into a very nice horse. Ho gallops well and appears likely to develop into a useful horse. Frenchman {Danube—Directoiro) has filled out into a sturdy galloper, who promises to win a race early in tho new season. Hogan’s two-yoar-olds, Bong Bird mid Giquer (late Jd. iirendon) have been mo ring well during the week. The latter is the more forward of the pair, but tho Kilbroney—Grey Linnet colt, with his sweeping stride, is rapidly catching up on his more seasoned rival. Ho will probably require time to enable him to mature, ami iiis owner, lias no desire to hurry him. It. Berry lias been putting plenty of work into Canio (Kontlock—Mezzo) 0.late, but it will be some time before Fight Bells is ready for fast work. Tho Vice-Admiral mare lias so far shown no signs of a recurrence of the soreness that troubled her lust year. A. D. M’lvpr has had no anxiety with Mr W. Stone’s horses of late, except in the case of Martial Dance, the Martian —Two Step gelding having displayed signs of soreness on several occasions. Silver Peak is quietly pursuing her' preparation for November, while Ficus is doing all he is asked with Dash and Willingness. Checkmate is proving a very nice horse to handle, never misbehaving or giving any trouble. Mantua will strip a very much improved mare when called upon to race next month. She is one of tho lean kind, but she lias noticeably furnished during the winter season.
