An increase in the charges for freight cartied by the Northern Steamship Company's steamers has been decided upon. The manager (Mr C. Ranson). has stated that, it has been necessary to raise the rates, owing to the increased prices tho company has to pay for coal, stores, etc., and also on account of the continual demand for higher wages from the employees. The new rates were only a little higher than the old ones, and varied somewhat. Tho revised charges came into force on Wednesday. OVERSEA SHIPPING. The S.S. and A. liner Kia Ora was timed to sail from Wellington this morning for London. Tho Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Waitemata sailed from San Francisco on August 26 bound for Auckland and Melbourne. She is expected to reach Auckland on September 23. The liner Westmeath arrived at Wellington from Newcastle on Wednesday, with a cargo of coal, limber and horseshoes, besides a small quantity, of general cargo. She had a fine weather trip. After discharge she will proceed to Gisborne to commence Homeward loadmg. She should sail for Avonmouth from Wellington at the end of this month.
