EDUCATION BOARD.

TO-DAY’S MEETING. Tha Canterbury Education Board met today; present—Mr E. H. Andrews (chairman), mid Messrs Vv. A. Banka, H. J. Bignoll, J. Ct. Cow, J. Miwo, E. M. Armitage, C, S. ihompson, A. Peverill, T. Hughes a.nd W. P. Spencer. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. The Appointments Committee reported haring discussed with Mr W. M. Hamilton the question as to whether tho constitution of education boards could ho altered to advantage, and after hearing hie views v;m of opinion that tho present franchise was sufficiently open for anyone who 'wished to stand for election. Tho committee, however, felt that tho teachers might very well be directly represented on the board, and they therefore recommended that Mr Hamilton be asked to support this viev; before the Council of Education. A letter had been receded from the Kaiapoi Committee, asking that an assistant mistress might be appointed in lieu of two pupil-teachers. Tho matter had been referred to the senior inspector for consideration and report. With referenco to tho Department’s proposal to close the secondary department of the Kaikoura District High School, {he School Committee reported that from information obtained from tho head teachers of the Kaikonra and other schools it had been ascertained that there would be at least sixteen pupils available next year. The hope was expressed that the secondary cla-esea would not bo closed down. It had been agreed to furnish tho Department with a copy ot tho committee’s letter and to ask that! tho matter might bo held over until towards tho end of the year, when the number of qualified proficiency pupils would be known. The Manual and Technical Committee reported that at its meeting some discussion took place with regard to tho suggestions made at last meeting of the board that local examinations bo substituted for the annual examinations now conducted in tho colonies by the City and Guilds of London Institute, It had been agreed to take ho action in the ciattef. AGRICULTURE. A letter was received from tho Otago Education Board endorsing the resolution of tho board passed or. May G protesting against the non-recognition in the syllabus of agriculture us a handwork subject. A letter was received from the Education Department stating that no official date had been set aside for tho observance of Arbor Day, but education Tjoarda were expected to make their own arrangements, FINANCIAL. Tho financial statement for the past month was read and adopted. The chairman was authorised, to release fixed deposits if necessary, to meet overdraft on current account. Accounts amounting to £3llO 7b lOd were passed for payment. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. Tho Appointments Committee recommended tho board to raise the status of the North Bench school to that of a main school. It had been resolved to inform the Linwood Committee in reply to its application for . the erection of three rooms, that the Department would provide for only two. The dematation appointed for the purpose of reporting on tho condition of the Kniapoi school had recommended that the school should bo rebuilt on a new site of six acres, which the hoard should take stops to secure.
