A PROMISE CONFIRMED. Messrs W. K. M’ Alpine and P. R. Climie, representing tho Qiinteljihupyt Progress League, interviewed Die General Manager of Railways in Wellington yesterday, and informed him of the recent decision of the Progress League to further the Hiley plan. They endeavoured to_ get from Mr M’Viily a definite premise as to when the scheme would bo started, but ho could do no more than confirm his promise made a few days ago to members of Parliament, that the work would bo proceeded with at the earliest possible moment, and he could not possibly say the date. An invitation was given to him to visit Christchurch nt au early date to confer with members of the league and other citizens in regard to the whole matter, including the recommendations recently arrived nt by tho combined committee set up by the Chamber of Commerce. Mr Climie sent an urgent wire to-day cfeting Mr M’Viily if ho conld visit Christchurch next Saturday, to suit Canterbury members of Parliament, but a reply has not been received. It may be possible to make a combined business and social function.
