KAIAPOI. . M tho Kaiapoi Working Men's Club on Saturday, a card and billiard tournament took place between tbo Christchurch and Kaiapoi Working Men's Clubs. The scores wereEuchre—Christchurch 31, Kaiapoi 2S; cribbage—Kaiapoi 37, Christchurch 31; billiards—Kaiapoi 3 games, Christchurch 1; totals, Kaiapoi 63, Christchurch 66. Tho visitors were entertained by tho local club. ASHBURTON. Eleven degrees of frost were registered at tho Ashburton Domain weather station on Sunday - night. Reports from the back'country show that llin of snow fell at Mount Possession Station and 9in at Clent Hills and Lake Heron. A patty oi the residents of Governor’s Bay and surrounding districts met at tho homo of Mr Alfred Small, Allendale, to wish goodbye to Mr and Mrs Small and family, who are leaving tho district. During the evening Mr Robert Allan, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr Small with two soagr.iss chairs and Mrs Small with a handbag as a token ol appreciation. Mr Small suitably acknowledged the gifts, and thanked all thoso who had made the evening such a success. Supper was handed round by tho ladies of the district, and the singing of “ They are Jolly Good Fellows' - ’ brought an enjoyable evening to a dose. akaroa'. Akaroa, in comparison with other towns, has been very fortunate in its supply of coal, as at no time has there been n, real shortage. On Friday tho s.s. Perth landed 400 tons, which will suffice the residents for the rest of the winter. On Friday evening the residents of Takarnatua tendered a farewell social to Mr and Mrs W. Sunokell and Mr and- Mrs P. Cunningham, who are leaving the bay. The function was held in the schoolroom, and was in every wav a groat, success, a, large number being present. Mr H. Evans, officer commanding Areas 32 and 40 (North Canterbury), a very largo gathering of parents and the. general public assemblcji in the Driii Hall last night to witness aphysical drill display bv the Senior Cadets. Colonel It. Young, C.M.G., D.S 0., officer commanding tho Canterbury Military District, and Major Itcwc, officer commanding Group 9, were present. Lieutenant Evans, addressing those present, said he had extended tho invitation to tho public to sec for themselves the new methods adopted for military training. At tho close oi his remarks, the Cadets, under Sergeant-Major Pike, their trainer, were put through a series oi physical exercises, for which they were frequently applauded. Colonel Young congratulated the boys on their fine display. Under tho present system of training, lie said, the parents need have no fear ior tho future of their nuns. The old system, with tho bullying _ sergeant, had been entirely done away with. Colonel Young then presented prizes won during the year. Tho Lady Godiey Challenge Cup, given for musketry and general efficiency, was taken by Cadet Leonard G, Coatos; » gold medal for the Cadet showing the most improvement was won by Cadet Hector Murdoch: and a second prize ».f a silver medal went to Cadet F. A. Lane. Councillor P. B Lane apologised (or tho unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Mr C. J. Jennings), and thanked the military authorities for the opportunity to witness the display.
