Sir Joseph Ward left. Christchurch for Wellington last night. Dr Hughes, of Dunedin, has arrived in Cliristchurcli to take over the duties ol District. Health Officer, vice Dr dies son, transferred to Samoa. Inspector L. Mullaney, who was recently promoted from, the rank of SubInspector of Police, has fiouo to Whangn rei, where he is to be stationed. Mr Willi am A. Hogg, elder and only surviving son of Mr A. W. Hogg, and formerly connected with the Telegraph Department in Masterion, Wellington and elsewhere, died in Mastcrton Hospital on Sunday.

Mrs P. D. Menzies, of 43, Barbadoes Street, lins received word, that her stepson John I;. Monzies, is returning to Now Zealand with Draft No 1403, on the Athenic. which is duo to arrive at Wellington on or about March 1.

Tbo Hon J. Barr, chairman of the Christchurch Tramway Board, and -Mr Frank Thompson, general manager, returned to-day from Wellington, where they had attended tho conference in connection with the tramways dispute. Mr 11. A. M'Gregor, late second engineer of the Government steamer Amoknrn, has left Wellington for Palmerston North, to fill the position of Inspector of Machinery for that district in place of Mr S. Cable, who has been transferred to Wellington.

Messrs J. A. Frostick, George White. E. H. Wylos. P. H. Goodsir. and J, B. Laurenson will leave by tho first express this morning to attend the Industrial Corporation Conference in Dunedin, which opens to-morrow. They have arranged to meet the Auckland and Wellington delegates together with Mr Webb, of Levcjr Bros., who is also attending the conference.

The death has occurred at Melbourne of Captain Arthur Anthony, of the Victorian pilot service. Deceased joined the Onion Company’s service in 1886, and later was master of the Te. Kapo, Tara worn, Rotnkino. Rotorua. Dingsdee, Puknki, Mahinapua and Kawatiri. He loft the. company's service in July, 1900. to join the Victorian pilot service, in which he had remained over sirtce. The funeral took place at Kaikoura on Sunday afternoon of Mr B. A. Lyford, who met his death by a. motor accident on the Beach Road, Kaikoura, on Friday evening. Tho remains wore taken to St. Peter’s Church, where a short service was held, and afterwards the Rev. C. S. Saunders (performed the last ritos at, the cemetery. Many friends of the deceased attended to pay their tribute of respect, and much sympathy was expressed for the widow and relatives in their sudden bereavement.

• Dr Constancp,,Frost, of Auckland, has succumbed to an attaokk of influenza. Deceased was one of the oldest-estab-lished woman doctors of tho Dominion, and a member of a family well known and long settled at Onchunga. She graduated in Dunedin many years ago, and then took a post in the Adelaide Hospital. Since that she had practised in Auckland. Dr Frost was for many years bacteriologist at the Auckland Hospital, and it wag in the course of her.duties there that she contracted the disease that resulted in her death.

The following wore nominated members of the .Public Service Superannuation Board :—Mr J. O'Donovan, Commissioner of Police, representing police contributors; .Messrs 11. A.. Huggins and J. Mulvey, representing Post and Telegraph contributors ; Messrs F. AY, Rowley (secretary Labour Department). 0." R. C. Ro'bieson (General Manager State Fire office) and J. W. Mac Donald (assistant Public Trustee), representing contributors belonging to other departments. As the number nominated does not exceed the number of vacancies the above have been duly declared elected members of the board.

Mr IV. H. Fraer, head of the hosiery and glove departments at Messrs Beath and Co.’s drapery warehouse for ibo past fifteen years, severed bis connection with the firm on Saturday last. During the morning Mr C. Ogilvic, the manager, on behalf of the firm, presented Mr Fraer with a handsomely engraved gold watch, and Mr George Woods, tonior shopwalker, handed him a heavy gold albert on behalf of the stall. Highly complimentary reference was made to the, efficiency of the departments under Mr Fracr’s" control, to their remarkable growth under his direction, and to the exceedingly pleasant relations always existing "between him and the house” in p;enorai. Mr A. E. Mills, Chief Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, has been granted leave of absence from January 31 to March 31 next, when he will retire from the bank's service. Mr Mills, who is a recognised authority on the intricate subject- of foreign ' exchanges, joined the Bank of New Zealand in 1881 at. Auckland, shortiy after his arrival from the Old Country. V. hen the bank’s head office was transferred to Wellington, in 1894, in terms oi tile legislation of that year, be became secretary to the new board of directors. and continued in that position "util 19(12, when it became necessary that bo should obtain leave to recn]>erate after the work of those strenuous years. Of Jate years his health has become somewhat precarious, and he decided., over a. year ago, that on attaining pension age he would retire, in the hope that relief itom the cafes and anxieties of the bank’s business would assist in the reestablishment of his health.
