GENERAL ELECTION.

NOMINATIONS. The Hon. G. W. Russell (Liberal candidate for Avon) was nominated on Tuesday. His nominators were Mr RGarter (chairman Linwood .School Committee), .Mr F. Cartwright (honorary secretary 'Workers’ Education Association), Mr J. M. Taylor, Mr and Mrs J. I>. Forster (whoso seven sous wont to the ivax), Air W. H, Bellamy (exMayor of New Brighton), and Mrs R. & Ostler (chairwoman, of the Avon W omen s Liberal Committee). MEETINGS OF CANDIDATES, Mr I). G. Sullivan, Labour candidate for Avon, addressed a well attended meeting of Addington railway workshop employees at noon yesterday. \ vole of thanks and confidence was carried, and three cheers were given for Air Sullivan. Air H„ G. Fill, Liberal candidate for Lyttelton, addressed a meeting in the Opawa Schoolroom on Wednesday night. There was a fair attendance, and Air B. Pavitt was in the chair. The oaudidatVVas accorded a, hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr R. J:l. Turner, seconded by the Dev. T. Fee. Mr E. J. Howard, at Spreydon last night, addressed an appreciative audience wliich accorded him a hearty vote of thanks and confidence, with three cheers for I.a hour. Air Walker was chairman. The Hon. D. Buddo, ALP., addressed the electors of Papauui in St. Paul’s schoolroom on Monday evening. Alx R. Hawke was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. The candidate had a favourable reception, and at the close of bis remarks a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him, an amendment of confidence being withdrawn, at the request of Air Buddo, who said it would be best expressed at the ballot box. Air Buddo also addressed meetings at Burwood on Tuesday evening, and Courts’ Island on "Wednesday, an both of which places he waa well received. Air AlcCom.bs addressed the electors in the Duvauchelles Hall on 'iTiesday night. The chairnmnn of the School Committee, Mr T. W r . Wilkins, presided. Despite the inclemency of the weather there was a very good attendance. Air W. B. Bray moved a hearty vote of thnjiks to the candidate for his able address. This was seconded by Mr R. Pettigrew. Air T. I/o Comte, sen., moved nn amendment of thanks and confidence, wliich was seconded by Air P. Hayland. On a show of hands the amendment was carried by a large majority. Air McCombs addressed the electors in the Akaroa Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday night. The DepntyMayor (Mr A. R.. Alnn.ro) presided. On the motion of Air G. Armstrong, seconded by the Rev. J. W. Hayward, the candidate was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Tlio Hon. G. W. Russell addressed a. meeting at the North Brighton Surf Club’s pavilion on Wednesday night, seventy electors being present. Councillor E. A. Leaver presided. The candidate, who spoke for over two hours, and received n.u excellent hearing, waa accorded a vote of thanks and denceAir H. AI. Jones, Democratic Liberal candidate for the Ashburton seat, has been addressing well-attended meetings in the various outlying centres of the district, and has been well received. A hearty rote of thanks was accorded him at all meetings. Air W, J. Dickie, the Liberal candidate for the Ashburton seat, lias, since delivering his addresses at Lymlhnrst and .‘Ashburton, visited Mount Somers. Spreadeagle. Alford Forest, and Tinwald, ami addressed representative gatherings a.t each centre and been accorded hearty votes of thanks. His meeting at TinwaW on Wednesday night was very largely attended and he had a most cordial reception. OTAKI SEAT, [Pm P»*m Aisoouttow.) WELLINGTON, December 4. .Mr A. J. B. Isherwood, candidate for Otaki, held a, meeting at Upper Hurt fco-night. Mr P. Robertson, who presided over a, large attendance, explained that the candidate was suffering from a heart, attack, and probably would not be able to apeak very long. Mr Isherwood then rose and said he was standing as a Liberal,' although not supported by the Liberal Party or any trade or profession. Tbe candidate denied a, statement alleged to have been made that he was the nominee of the liquor trade. At this stage Air Isherwood. announced that he was too unwell to proceed, but would address the electors on a future occasion. The mooting then terminated. INVERCARGILL SEAT, [Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, December 4. The Hon. J. A. Hanau opened his campaign in the Municipal Theatre tonight. There was a large attendance, and Councillor Longuot presided. The candidate dealt with general political topics and expressed approval of most of the planks in Sir Joseph Ward’s programme, advocating a State hank, increased graduated tax and increment taxation, and a return to the pre-war Territorial system; Dealing with the cost of living, he declared that Professor Fisher’s scheme, dealing with the value of the sovereign, should be given a trial. He said he had been asked if he would take a. seat in the present Government if offered to him, hut ho declared that he would not. On a. noconfidence motion he would vote to put the Liberal in power, but would not take office in any Government where the Ministers were not selected purely for their qualifications. He favoured an. elective executive. He also stated that he would not take a, portfolio iuv-' leas he had complete control of His department and the moneys of the department. A vote, of thanks and confidence was carried, with a fair body of dissenters. PALMERSTON SEAT. [Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON December 4. Mr J. A. Nash, Reform candidate, spoke to a crowded audience to-night. He said that Air .Massey stood for sound government and would do his best for the country and. the people. He deprecated the go-slow policy and favoured sane Labour. The candidate waa subjected to a. running fire of comments, but, on the whole, had a favourable hearing.
