TO-DAY’S SITTINGS. CHRISTCHURCH. A brief sitting of the -Magistrate s i Court this morning was presided over by -Mr V. G. Day, S.M. DRUNKENNESS. One first offender for drunkenness was convicted and discharged, and another was fined ss, in default twenty four hours. Another first offender, charged with helpless drunkenness, waa remanded until to-morrow. FALSE PRETENCES. Cedi Geoffrey Turnbull, a young man, pleaded guilty to a charge that on November ti, with intent to defraud, ho obtained from Alfred Thurkutde tho sum of £4, by falsely slating that ho was a member of the Salvation Army Rand st Dunedin, and was on his way to Auckland to attend a Salvation Army wedding. He was further charged that on or about November 1, at Dunedin, with intent to defraud, ho obtained from Charles Roan, the sum of £3 by a similar fa iso pretence. The Magistrate convicted the accused and ordered him to como up for sentence when called upon, provided ho remained in tho Salvation Army Homo for six mouths. LYTTELTON. Before -Messrs F. Knights, J.P., and YV. C. Cleary, J.P. ’ dailies Leu, charged with being drunk and disorderly and using obioeno language, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, lined £2, in default fourteen (lays’, for disorderly conduct, and £3, in default twenty-one days, for obscene language. The police‘stated that accused, with a number of other firemen, was outside the hotel on Saturday afternoon talking ‘‘fight 1 ’ Accused was told to go away by the police, but refused to do so and used tho obscene language complained of When arrested ho endeavoured to fight the constable. John Messenger was charged witli disorderly beluvvour whilst drunk: and further, that ho had obstructed Constable tiodgius, and damaged a cell utensil valued at 2os. Senior-Sergeant Jackson stated that accused, who was a fireman on the Kaikonra, had behaved like a madman. It was necessary that the police should be protected against these men who obstructed constables in tho execution* of their diiuy, as casts like that We re becoming too prevalent.
