EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Our Correspondent.] ADVANCE NEW BRIGHTON. ,The chief subject of interest during; tlie week has been the scheckiles of work, brought down at Monday night's council meeting, in connection with the big loan to bo placed before the ratepayers early in the New Year. It is admitted on all sides that the loan is absolutely necessary, and that the.borough is crying out for improvements in many directions. The opinion Jias been expressed by many that the amount is not largo enough. It is ' thought that the borough resources are quite equal to a bigger loan, and that such schemes as high pressure water should be undertaken with the other works. Pleasure has been expressed with the amount set aside tor the bridge and beach improvements, and it is sincerely to bo hoped that the council will, receive the assistance of other bodies in providing some of ’ the improvements. Early in the Now Tear tho -Mayor (Mr E. Kibblewhite) will take steps to place the proposal before, tho ratepayers. COUNCIL COMMENTS. Considerable interest will be taken in the experiment to be made by the Waimairi Burgesses’ Association, with too assistance of Captain Rorko, who has had experience of sand in Palestine. The idea is to peg rabbit wire-netting over the sand so that motor traffic can negotiate it at tho Esplanade and Berry Street. Building permits have now gone into record figures, totalling £23,610 since April 1. The band instruments have not yet all been handed in. and it is the intention of the council to place tho matter m the hands of tho borough solicitor. Councillors Leaver and Israel son are arranging for tho Woolston, Tramway and Derry's Band to give concerts during the season. .After some discussion at Monday night’s council meeting it was decided owing to tho proximity of the elections, to postpone tho first gala meeting until December 20. SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. On Friday alter noon a number of soldiers from tlie Orthopedic Hospital were entertained by Mr and Mrs Kibblewhite at their residence, Union Street. The men were motored to New Brighton by Mrs Cody, Misses Murray, Otley, Osbourne an Fleming

and Air Hargreaves. Despite the I somewhat linsatisiactory state ol the / weather a pleasant afternoon was, spent in the pretty rooms and grounds. The Alayor and AJayoress were assisted by number of ladies.of the local Red Gross branch. A musical programme was contributed by Mrs Croppd Misses Richardson and Edmonds (2), unci Messrs AV. Drake and Greenfield. It has been arranged to hold those functions in New Brighton regularly. TREK TO KAIKOUUA. Air G. AV. Bishop has planned to take the Boy .Scouts to Ivaikoura. The party will walk both ways, the swags being carried on the new trek cart. CATHOLIC CHURCH CONCERT. the concert held in Joyland on Thursday, in aid of the New Brighton Catholic Church debt extinction fundi was a, great success financially and Alany of the performers are Dominion competition winners, and the perfomance altogether was of a. very high standard. Items were given by Airs Allan Young, the Misses Middleton, AI. O’Connor, Valerie Anderson, C. Ryan, and Alessrs AV. Brittenden, James Cox, Soanes, Bert Upjohn, Allan Young and blaster Grieve. As a continuation of the effort, a lucky number guessing competition, with a B.S.A. bicyclo, valued £2O, as the prize, will he drawn on December 16. The bicycle is on view at Air Hill’s shop at Sen A’iew Road . BEACH CARNIVAL. Attention is called to the advertisement announcing a, carnival to be held at New Brighton on Anniversary Dav. December lb. LECTURE. On Tuesday evening next a mootin'will he held in the Bier Hall, und'eT the auspices of the W.G.T.U., when AUss Al’CorkingdaJe,, of Queensland, will speak on matters pertaining to tho licensing poll.
