Mrs H. Buckland (Dunedin) is m town. Mrs de Mey (Wellington) is visiting Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. Williamson (Wellington) are visiting Christchurch. Mr and Mrs F,. C. Bennett (Geraldine) are staying at Warner's. Mrs E. Hudson (Dunedjn) is spending a few days in C'hristcliurch. Mr and Mrs G. A. Fenwick (Blenheim) are staying at the United Service. Miss Betty Hale and Miss Kathleen O’Brien have gone to Kaikoura for a holiday, Mr and Mrs Brett Shand are visiting Christchurch, and staying at the United Sendee, Mrs Cox and Miss Murphy have returned to Timaru after a stay in Christchurch. Mrs C. J. Loughnan (Wellington) and Mrs J. R. Newman (Timaru) have been in town on a short visit. Nurse Ivathelino Garbine is spending a short holiday at the Hydro, Timaru, as the guest of Mrs Alec Roberts. Mr and Mrs W. G. Moore (Dunedin) arrived in Christchurch on Saturday, and axe staying at the Clarendon. Mr and Airs S. G. Raymond and Miss Maureen Raymond returned to Christchurch last week from Timaru. The Misses Evans (Christchurch), who have been the guests of Mrs W. Evans, Timaru, have returned to Christchurch. The engagement is announced (says the Auckland “Star”) of Miss Gertrude Brown, younger daughter of Professor F. D. Brown, to Mr T. GRussell, of Knowlescourt, Christchurch. Dr Mary Barbas, M.Sc. (N.Z.). M.R.C.S. (Eng.), L.R.O.P. (Lon.), was elected a member of the Medico-Psycho-logical Association of Great Britain and Ireland at the quarterly meeting in May, her proposers being Sir George • Savage, Hr J. G. Porter Phillips and Dr R. H. Cole. At the July London examination she was successful in gaining her medico-psychological certificate. The wedding will take place in Auckland, at St Mary’s. Parnell, on Wednesday next, of Doris, younger daughter of Mr Harconrt Sawyer, Woodsido, Windsor Forest, England), and Mr Outha Mackenzie, youngest son of Sir Thomas Mackenzie, High Commissioner for New Zealand. Mrs Ronald Orbell (Oamaru) and Mr and Mrs Alan Orbell (Otago) have re-: turned to their homes after several! days in Christchurch where they came to attend the wedding of Mr E. Orbell and Miss Mary Tabart. i ■ • Hie past and present pupils of the i Normal District High School held their j annual fancy dress reunion in the Orange Hall on Friday evening. There was a large number of past and present ; pupils present and a very enjoyable ■ evening was spent. Chaperones were Mrs Aschraan and Mrs Wyn Irvin, ! and during the evening songs were 1 giro by Misses A. M’Ltean and A. ! Wilbraham and Miss M. Baty gave a recitation. ~ j ; It has been decided by the West; Lyttelton School Committee to hold a j fair in aid of the funds on December j 3. A number of ladies interested met the teachers and arranged for the following stalls:—Jumble, Misses Allison . and itzgevald and Mr Allison; pro- ■ duce, Mesdames Johnston, Guv and Miss Fraser; sweets and-cakes, Mcsdames Gower, Fletcher and Miss Miller; afternoon tea, Mesdames D»rbidge, Holst and Miss Handley. Mis Page was appointed general supervisor. | The weekly returned soldiers’ dance on Saturday evening was the best attended of the season. Mr and Mrs A. W. Jamieson were the host and hostess. During the evening Mrs Jamieson was presented with a lovely scarlet bouquet tied with red, white and blue ribbon. There is to be only one more dance in the Art Gallery, but to wind-up the winter series there is to be a. dance in the Colosseum, probably the week after next. The same committee is arranging the dance, and it is anticipated it will be as successful as the Saturday evening socials, ; The excellent afternoon- tea provided for the residents at the opening of the i Fresh Air School at Sumner was ea- 1 tirely contributed by the ladies of the district, and, after listening to the speeches in a cool easterly wind, the guests keenly enjoyed the hot tea and the delicacies. The management was entrusted to the lady members of the committee and staff of the school, who. in spite of heavy demands made by a largo attendance proved fully equal to the task, and were unsparing in their attention to all.
