TANNERS AND FELLMONGERS.

CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr W. H. Hugger) sat to-day at Christchurch to hear the industrial dispute initiated by the Canterbury Tanners, Fellmongers and Skinners’ Union. The union’s assessors were Messrs J. Timms, J. MJlburn and J. W. O’Loughlin, and the employers’ assessors were Messrs C. M. Ollivier, W. Nicholls and T. H. Baker. Mr F. W. Ellis appeared for the union, and Mr F. Cooper for the employersThe hours’ clause, which was agreed to, provided for a 48 hour week, from 7-30 a-m. till 5 p.m. on five days, with four and a half hours between 7.30 a.m. and noon on Saturday, alternative shifts to bo worked, if necessary, of not more than eight hours on six consecutive days of alternate weeks, thirty minutes to be allowed for meals out of each shift without deduction; no worker under twenty-one years to be allowed on morning or evening shiftsThree shifts were agreed to in cases were work was continuous for more than eighteen hours, at a minimum of eifcht hours’ ■ pay. Tlie union modified their overtime demaid, in terms of the Court’s award to provide for time and a half for tlie first three hours, and double time afterwards. _ This was agreed to. The existing conditions were agreed to in regard to the payment for holidays, and tho following holidays were also agreed to; —New Year’s lifty Good Friday, Easter Mondav. Labour Day, Boxing Day, King’s Birthday, Christmas Day, local works picnic, and show Day. The old award was accepted in reto the paying of wages fortnightly within ten minutes of leaving work.
