N.Z. STAFF CORPS.

SELECTED CANDIDATES. ACTIVE SERVICE MEN, Before the war the Defence policy m New Zealand was to recruit its Staff Corps from young officers specially trained at Duntroon in Australia; so many promising and specially selected cadets or young territorials were sent each year to Duntroon to be trained, and, according to the merit they displayed, so were they appointed to vacancies on the New Zealand staff. This policy is still being cameo on, but the war " wastage ” of Staff Corps officers has been greater than in peace fhsrc are how more vacancies to fill, and the quu&tlon arose whether a greater number of lads should be sent fo Duntroon to meet the demand, or whether returned soldiers of the Expeditionary Force should he drawn upon. The latter course was decided upon by the Defence authorities. ONLY A FEW SENIOR OFFICERS SELECTED. - Applications were accordingly called from returned officers, and about 300 responded. These 300 applications were r 2 Tl i i w < 'd recently by a board consisting °r j r fi? r ~Oenerals Robin and Russell, and Brigadier-Generals Richardson and Hart, and those officers named below were selected to proceed to camp to undergo a period of training and test, to enable their fitness and capability to no judged for peace work. Their'undoubted ability on the field has already been determined. Among the applicants were a number of senior officers, but the hoard was able to select only a few. deciding in favour of_ younger men of lower rank, because of the; prospect of their greater length of service, which is an important consideration. There is in the Staff Corps only a limited establishment of senior officers. bo_ some of those selected will relinquish grades in rank, as has been done in the case of Brigadier-Gen-erals Melville and Young, who are accenting service in New Zealand as colonels In all cases, the selection among the officers has naturally been based principally on war record. It should also be clearly understood that, though appearing as selected officers, thev are not .vet appointed to the Staff Corps but nave to. prove their fitness for staff work in the “ try-out ” which is about to take place. Actual appointments will be announced later. NAMES OF SELECTED CANDIDATE^. Th e selected names are as follow; Lieutenant-colonel E. Puttick, D 3.0.. The Terraco, Wellington. Lieutcnaiit-colonol P. H.
