KHAKI FOR SALE.

NOT WANTED AT SPREYDON. Not a little jocularity was occasioned at last night’s meeting of the Spreydon Borough Council by the reading of a circular letter from the Military Supplies Purchase Office, offering for sale a quantity of khaki drill and trimmings, which the Defence Department has for disposal. “As the khaki drill and drab jean would make serviceable working suits, trousers, sheets, overalls and aprons,” ran the covering letter, “possibly you may ho interested either directly or on behalf of vour employees.” ‘ ‘ There are about two sheets of foolscap, gmng prices, widths, heights, etc., said the Mayor (Mr A. Manhire). To take full advantage of the prices you have to take it in bale lots.” “ Well, seeing that there are eight councillors and the Mayor ” said a councillor suggestively. “We certainly should have a uniform,” said another- “ I think,” said Councillor D. Williamson, “ that, considering the present high price of clothing, our men would appreciate some aid from ns. I think that wo should leave it in your hands to take action, if advisable. It ia very good of the Government to send such information, and, if taken in the proper spirit, I believe it could bo turned to good account.” Councillor E. O’Rourke: “I think tho time lias gone when men will go about in overalls and dungarees.” Tlie Mayor: “I think that they should start by putting members of Parliament in it. When we talk about buying uniforms for the men, I don’t tlnnk the men will like it.” Councillor Williamson: “ Suppose a man is carting rubbish with a decent suit of clothes- He should LaTe so rut* overall such as is suggested here. The overalls could he used when the men were doing certain kinds of work,” ’ The Mayor: “It would bo "cheaper for us to go and buy suits of overalls.” Councillor O’Rourke: “If we bought these things from the Defence Department they would ho hung up in the sheds and eaten by rats before they were used.” Tho letter was received.
