[From Opr Correspondents,] OMIHI During the last ween a welcome rain has fallen. Spring has been ushered in under the most pleasant auspices, and there is every prospect of abundance of feed. Stock has come through the winter fairly well. No Borioua losses are recorded, and unless a cold snap is experienced this month the farmers will have every reason to bo satisfied. A large tract of lea land is being ploughed over for spring wheat and oats, and some of the settlers are busy with their turnip laud. A few lambs are to be seen in the paddocks, and are doing well. The Fallen Soldiers’ Monument Committee have completed their canvass for funds, which met with encouraging results. A meeting is to Ire held this week to select "a site for the erection of the memorial. Tho railway "cut” is being felt i n this district, both in regard to tho forwarding of stock to the markets and the receiving 5 of goods and mails. The district owes a debt ot gratitude to. the Progress League for Iha masterful way in which they have stepped into tho breach to deliver tho mails. Mr H. Brown, who has sold his form, was entertained at a farewell social in the gdodsshed on Tuesday last, when a number of residents were in attendance, ‘ Dancing was engaged in. and was greatly enjoyed by (hose present. • The lack of vocal items was' noticeable, and the management would do well to lake..note of this on future occasions. A bountiful supper wns provided by th© committee. After supper Mi- ,T. Baxter, chairman of tho committee,, in a. short ’speech presented Mr Brown, on hehalt of the residents of the district, with a snit-ca.so, aud Mrs Brown with a travelling nig; Messrs D I Doak and R. Dalton, old schoolmates of Mr Brown, ffpoke of tho pleat’s many good qualities, and two of his near neighbours Mr tV. Brydon and Mr W. Baxter, added a tribute of esteem. Mr Brown suitably thanked the residents on behalf of Mrs Brown and himself and said he would ever remember the good folk of Omihi. After the singing ot “ For they are Jolly Good Fellows " dancing was resumed, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent.
