INSULATED TONNAGE.
A SERIOUS SHORTAGE. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 5. In a statement to the Press the Hon D. H. Guthrie said he had received the following cable message from the High Commissioner, dated London, July 30:—“-Instated tonnage—With reference to my telegram of July 14 and your telegram of July 28,1 have further represented the seriousness of the position to the Australian Tonnage -Committee. They are unable to allocate more than 17,000 tons during August, but hope to improve on the 30,000 tons promised during September'. They inform me that they are working to meet the request contained in a cable from the Wellington Tonnage Committee, namely, to reduce the quantitv or meat in store in New Zealand by December 1 to approximately 108,000 tons.
The Minister adds;— This shows the position to be more hopeful, but delays duo to various causes must be taken into account.
