A POLITICAL MEETING.
NO PERMIT OBTAINED. VAUDEVILLE COMPANY FINED. At tho Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., Sellers Tlieatra and Vaudeville Company was charged with allowing its theatre to be used on Sunday evening, July 20, for .the purpose of holding a meeting without first obtaining a permit from the Christchurch City Council. Leslie Hardie, Inspector to the City Council, laid the information, and Mr A. C. Foyer appeared for the City Council.
Walter Helsdon, local manager for tho defendant company, admitted the offence. He said that on all previous occasions when the hall had been let for meetings permits had- been obtained. Chi the last occasion, when Mr H. Holland, M. P., applied for the use of the hall, he (witness) told him it would bo necessary to. obtain a hermit from tho City Council. Witness did not apply for permits himself. He left that for anyone who wished to use the theatre. Mr Fryer said that he did not wish to ask for a heavy fine, although he thought something more than a nominal fine should bo imposed. The theatre was used for the purpose of holding a political: meeting, and had this been known a permit might have been refused.
The defendant company was fined 20a and costs, and was ordered to pay £1 Is solicitor's costs.
