COMPILATION OF ROLLS.

POSTMEN TO ASSIST, Although the date of the general election has not yet been fixed there is a good deal of activity in the preparation of rolls, and in the case of Christchurch North the main roll snould be back from the printer a week from to-day. The closing of the supplementary roll, of course, caunot bo fixed until the date of the election is decided. A new departure will be made in the enrolling of electors, and from present indications it is believed that postmen will deliver and collect forms of enrolment. For the new 7 scheme a central electoral bureau has been established in each of the four centres, and tho Postal Department will detach a certain number of postmen to work under the direction of the officer in charge of the bureau to facilitate the enrolment of electors. In country districts "where no postmen are employed the postmaster will carry out the work of enrolling. In the case of Christchurch the bureau will be under the direction of u , vans > registrar* for Christ-' church North, to whom the other city registrars will supply rolls for the purpose of organising the postmen in their work.

CHRiSTCHURCH SOUTH. MR HOLLAND AND MR ELL. Mr H- Holla rid,, in roplv to a deputation last night, said that he had written to Mr 11. G. EH, M.P.. on March 5, in regard to Mr Ell standing for Christchurch South, and had not received a reply. Mr Ell stated to-day that he had informed Mr Holland before the date on which the letter was written that he intended to stand for Lyttelton, and had also mads that announcement in the newspapers. Mr Holland subsequently wrote asking Mr Ell to,, put the statement in writing. He declined to do that. As a matter of fact, more than three years ago, Mr EH added, he had told personal friends that he intended to stand for Lyttelton, because he wished the Port Hilla and the Peninsula to bo in the district he represented, as some of the most important public work of his life was done there, and ho wished to strengthen his hands in order to complete. More, than two years .ago he told Mr M'Combs of his intention.

CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED. [Pee Press Association.] IMNNEVIRKE, July 31. Mr G. Hunter, the sitting member, will contest the Waipawa seat" at,the next election. Mr R. B. Ross ia definitely announced as a candidate for the Pahiatua seat, which, he formerly represented.
