SOLDIERS’ GRAVES.

UNIFORM HEADSTONES TO BE ERECTED. According to a letter received by the Citizens' Defence Corps from the Director of Base Records, the care of all graves of soldiers of the Empire, including any who may have died whilst undergoing training in New Zealand, is the responsibility of the Imperial 'War Graves Commission. The Commission, after devoting coniderable time and attention to the matter, has decided on the erection of a memorial of uniform design, over each grave, the cost of which, so far as New Zealand is concerned, will be borne by the GovernmentIn most of the New Zealand cemeteries plots have been set aside exclusively for the burial of deceased soldiers, and it is to the care of graves in these plots and other graves paid for by the Government that the attention of the, War Graves Commission will he particularly directed- As tho general policy will be to erect headstones of uniform design on all graves in soldiers’ burial plots, permission will not be given to erect private headstones in such plots. This restriction_ will no 1 , however, obtain whore burial has been in privatelyowned ground, but it is not considered that tho Government will accept financial responsibility for any work cairied out at the instance of private individuals.
