The Newspaper Press Directory, is- - sued in London, claims a dominant; position in the wo worlds—the newspaper world and the advertising world, its history goes back to 18-16 ; when Sir Itobert Peel was repealing the Corn Laws. When it was issued first, iiot a. single daily paper was x>ublishcd in tho United Kingdom outside London. Tho 1919 issue of tho Newspaper Press Directory, whicli we have just received, tells a very different tale. To-day there are no fewer than 2269 newspapers in the United Kingdom, of whicli thirty dailies arc issued in London, 119 in the English provinces, 19 in Scotland, and 16 in Ireland. All the familiar features are to bo found in the 1919 issue of the Directory, which deals not only witii tho newspapers of the Empire but of the world. The issue contains a series of well-informed and brightly written articles upon Imperial trade. Of special interest is an article on the oversea trade department of the Board of Trade written by the late Mr W. R. Cairns, B.A- The Newspaper Press Directory has always emphasised the value of .inter-imperial trade. both from the standpoint of the Dritidi exporter and tho buyer in the overseas dominions, 'Hie statistical tables included in the various trade articles afford ample evidence that an era of great commercial _exp.m«ion is ahead of Britain. Aiktraljn., Canada, New Zealand. South Africa- ami India-—all are ready to bnv just as soon as the British merchant is ready lo'-sel! and shipping is available for the exchange of goods. No tmblicatioti sets out this evidence more fully and with such up-to-date information. ?n cheering a message will deewn the welcome always extended to this “ hardy annual.”
