THE HOLIDAY.
FINE WEATHER PREVAILS. The city to-day was quiet, except for the passage of holiday-makers. All the business places, with the exception of a few fruiterers’ and confectioners 1 shops, were closed. Shortly after leu o’clock large crowds gathered in the Cathedral Square in order to hoard trams for the trots at Canterbury Park. Sumner, New Brighton and the Cashmore Hills claimed attention, while many other people took the opportunity of a quiet stroll through the Public Gardens. A rather cold easterly wind prevailed during the greater part of the day, but the weather in all other respects was more favourable than might have been expected at this time of the year. A general holiday is being * observed at Lyttelton to-day, and no work is being carried out on the waterfrontThe various harbour ferries wore plviug as usual, but there were few picnickers Giving to the cold weather. A large number of visitors, however, made an inspection of the various overseas and coastal steamers, of which there are fourteen in port to-day.
