SOLDIERS' SOCIAL.
—* ■ THE MAYOR AS HOST. By far the most successful of tho series of socials given for the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Saturday night, when the Mayor and Mayoress weTo host and hostess at a very brilliant gathering in the Art Gallery. The gallery was very tastefully decorated, and the lounges' and card rooms were well arranged. Altogether there were about 150 conples present, the gentlemen including a number of officers and cadets from the transport Carpentaria, several delegates from the Returned Soldiers’ Association Conference, and members of the Maori football team, while the ladies included nurses from tho orthopedic ward and the members of the Harbour Lights Girls’ Club. _ Dancing continued till midnight, with the variation of cards and music, and an excellent supper was served. Dr Thacker in a brief speech expressed his pleasure at being able to do something for the returned splcliors. He stressed the need of a town hall, and said that the crowd that evening allowed the need of a stadium or dance hall, which he would do his best to establish. _ A short musical programme was contributed by Mias Kinlev, Mr J. Wright and Mr Gibbs.
