ENEMY BEATEN OFF.

(Received April 6, 12,10 p.m.) I/ONDON, April 5, Sir Douglas Haig reports;— There was heavy fighting in the afternoon ami late in the evening between the Luce River and the Somme. The enemy, employing strong forces, delivered repeated assaults. These were beaten off, with loss to the enemy, but wo were slightly pressed back to the eastward of Villers-Hretouneux, where our positions were maintained. The enemy's artillery, northward of the Somme, was active during the night in the neighbourhood of Jlucquoy and in the Scarpe valley.
