LATE COLONEL SLATER.

THE FUNERAL. The mortal remains of the late ' Colonel. H. Slater, V.JX, were laid to rest in the Avonside Churchyard yesterday afternoon with full military honours. The cortege left the family residence, "Snndilanda," at threo o'clock, preceded by a firing party drawn from tho N.Z.G.A., under Captain M.'Donald. The pall-bearers were Colonels C. J. Cooper, R. H. Snow and G. C. R. Wolfe, and LieutenantColonels H. S. E. Hobday, C. R. Oi-ess-well and J. Deans. The chief mourners were .Mr H. R. Slater (son) and Mr G. Mason (son-in-law). There was a large attendance at Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, where a choral service was held prior to the final service at the graveside. The service, in tho church was conducted by the Rev A. Allan, and at the grove Bishop Julius, assisted by the Rev O. Fitzgerald, conducted the burial service, at the close of which three volleys were fired by the filing party. Among those present were many represent a fives of various bodies with which Colonel Sinter had been associated, especially the military and legal profession, citizens, parishioners of Holv Trinitv Church, and friends of the family. Colonel R. A. ChafTey. Officer Commanding the Canterbury district, represented the military, and other officers present were .Majors IT. S. Batcbelor. A. J. M'Credie, J. P. Oakes and F. T. Stevens (Snmoan Garrison), Raphael, Bntoliclor, ffobbs and Barker, Mr T. A. B. Bailey represented tho Stipendiary Magistrates, and the Canterbury Law Society was represented by Messrs S. 0. Raymond. K.C, G. Harper, J. C. Hnlmore. G. I>. Pascoe and M. J. Greason. The following members of the legal profession also attended :- -Messrs J. A. Cassidy, A. F. Wright, O. T. J. Alpors, W. J. 'Hunter, J. R. Cuningham, A. Nicholls, 11. IT. Loughnan and H. Raphael. The Church was represented by Dean Harper, Canon Pascoe and the Rov "Jasper Smyth and .Mr U. '>• Andrews (chancellor of the diocese), and Messrs J. W. M.'Gregor (churchwarden), and F. If. Matthews and C. Maddren (vestrymen). The Royal Humane Society, with which Colonel Slater bad been closely associated since its inception, was represented by the following members of the Court of Directors : - Canon W. S. Bean, (lev E. Eliot Chambers, and Messrs F. 0. B. Bishop, W. 11. Ciieesman, H. B. Kirk and C. D. Morris. The Rev E. Eliot, Chambers also represented the Navy League. Among others present were :■— Messrs E. J. Taylor, T. Cowlishaw, E. C. Raphael, T. Stone, W. Moulday, W. Thompson, H. B. Sorenson, IT. R. Smith, W. S. Godfrey, and military veterans and representatives of various military and other organisations, including the Boy Scouts of Holy Trinity Church, Avonside. Letters and telegrams of sympathy were sent to the. relatives from many parts of the Dominion and wreaths were also sent by the following:—Dr and Mrs Diamond.
