THE EFFICIENCY COMMISSIONER.
FURTHER REFERENCE TO PARLI AME ST AMY COM MEN TS. POST-AVAR ORGANISATION OH INDUSTRIAL CHAOS. On making (lie usual call at tl'io office of the Efficiency Commissioner this morning. ;i ••Star" reporter was informed thiil there wore quitoxa number of questions of very groat 'importance which might, perhaps, under_ normal conditions, have been communicated to the. Press. The work of the Commissioner was proceeding as usual, and be was not relinquishing his efforts in endeavouring to make such recommendations from time to time as wore deemed Ivy him to lie in the. national interest. In view, howover, of several statements made in Parliament, it might- he prudent to withhold the information until after the next mooting of the Efficiency Board, to he held on August M. Until niter that date no new information would he disclosed, hut at the same time, if there were any questions arising out of matters already made public, the Conimit-'sioivr would be only too pleased to give the Press any information he might be permitted to give.
The. matter which appears to he exercising the Commissioner's mind more than anything else is th > entire absence of adequate preparation to meet, postwar conditions. There is no outward or visible sign that anything of a practical nature is being done to meet the industrial problems which must, of necessity arise in this country, as well as in every other country now at war, immediately following the declaration of peace. The business of the country is not exclusively in the hands of individuals. It is a national question.' and requires national preparation, and it is quite clear that the view* of the Commissioner are very r-.trong upon this point—-that if tin: dominion refrains fr<vr. making due preparation to meet the industrial problem, industrial chaos will inevitably follow.
