The BrownhillrlvanJiou .by-election resulted as under : Lutey (Labour) .... 1/524 John Scaddan (Minister of Mines) 1417 (Mr Scaddan was formerly Labour Premier of Western Australia, but- he disagreed w>th the majority of his party in connection with tne conscription issue, and this brought about the downfall of the Government of which he was the head. The Hon Frank ."Wilson then "became Prime Mil istcr, bt't the party which supported him was divided, and a few weeks ago ho was under the necessity of resigning. A new leader, Mr Lefroy. was chosen, and on his accession to the Premiership he formed a mixed Cabinet representing all interests outside Labour, and in the new Administration Mr Scaddan became Minister of Mines. It is a inle in the Western State, that members of the House on Appointment to office are under the necessity of securing re-election, and it was in consequence of this that the byelection for Brownhill-Ivanhoe took place on Saturday).
