RED CDSS NOTES.

FROM THE CENTRAL DEPOT. SOME MONEY DONATIONS. (Contributed.) In the last few weeks on the list?; of donations there nave been several substantia 1 gifts which show unabated energy and enthusiasm on behalf of the sick and wounded. It do not suppose that many people read very carefully the lists of subscriptions that appear from time to time in the daily papers, so I am goiny to draw special attention to one or two of them. The Waimate sub-centre heads the list with a generous gift of £SOO. And ' by no means does this mark a reducj tion of their gifts in kind. The large I hampers of garments arrived at the I central dexiot this month as usual. The I work from Waimate, although it has hitherto not been specially mentioned, is well to the fore in quality. All the cutting, I under,si and, is done under ■ tbi? supervision of a professional tailor I (who gives his time as a dmntion), and the garments show evidence too of exceptionally careful sewing.

Next on tho list of recent money donations larger than the average, comes the sum of £222 10s 3d from tho Christchurch Literary and Musical Competitions Society, the proceeds of the competitions held a few weeks ago. And an acceptable donation followed a few days later from the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association, the half proceeds df a concert.

These largo drum Hoik are generally rein ittcd direct to England and used for the greatest. Red Cross needs at the time, and the public can have every confidence in the administration of Red Cross Funds at. Home. If our funds could speak, many would he the stories of comfort arid succour to the wounded, of hunger and thirst relieved, and of stricken men brought hack to health. RJCI> CROSS " RECORD."

The number of the Red Cross " Record :! to he published early next week contains directions for knitting tho •'stump sock" and also for making

the cholera belt, and a diagram of the

latter. It is proposed in the August, number of the "Record" to publish directions for knitting the Ui-'w woollen cap for wear on the hospital ships. The oar flaps are a welcome addition to this cap and much appreciated in the cold winds at sea.

The July number also contains an

interesting letter from Sister Dora from Mesopotamia. She is now on a hospital barge and travels up and down the Tigris, taking patients from the "learing stations to the base hospitals at Basra and Amara. We now have in the (t ßccord !! in addition to a page from tho Wellington 1 centre, a psigo from the North Otago [ ''ub-centre, and ari inquiry came thi.s week from the Duned : n centre about a page of O'tago and Southland news, so we hope the August number will contain items of interest, concerning our fellow-workers in the south. Needless to say, Red Cross news from all over the Dominion is welcomed. We all like to know what tho other centres are doing. COMFORTS. Several branches have, .sent cases of books for transport hospitals. Ashburton sub-centre sent two cases, Waimate one and Amberley one. Many private parcels of books have been received, and the monthly packet of books from . the Oood Templars. The department is I badly in need of games, such as

draughts, ludo, etc., for the men in the local hospitals and the transport hospitals. The request came in from Haunter for a set of iron quoits for the men there, and the committee would lie very grateful for a donation in that form. A case of honey was sent to the comforts hv.a member of the Oxford ] : ! Ed Cross branch and several largo pots of pickles and unices (gifts from Christchurch) are quite a help for providing extras for local hospitals. The henev has already been sent to the English hospitals. GARMENTS. An order was received from the Chatham Islands for garments to be niado up. It i*. not generally known ihat a branch has been started there, and great interest- is taken in their work at the depot. Some of ( the branches have sent in good donations of garments this month, especially the Merivalo and Rugby Street, branch and the Yaldhurst branch, tho former sending v.- addition to other garments 90 pairs cf pyjamas and the latter 12 dressing-gown's, also in addition to other gifts of garments.
