Mr .Joshua Littb is still endeavouring to completes arrangements for pumping silt from the river on to the low-lying parts on the Brighton side of tho river. Mr Little has so far been unable to obtain tho necessary permission frcin the Harbour Board. The Brighton Council at its meeting on Monday decided that, dredging tho river judiciously arid pumping tho silt on to tho low-lying parts would bo a benefit to the borough. FIRE BRIGADE AFFAIRS. Fire Brigade affairs received t* good de«il of attention at last Monday's meeting of ttie council. Councillor Israelson, chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee, made out the case for ttie brigade who, ho said, were urgently in need of uniforms and plant. On tho recommendation of the Works Committee, the council has decided to write to tno Hon G. W. Russell, the member for tho district, asking him to use his best endeavours to obtain a £ for £ subsidy on all money proposed to bo raisod by a beach carnival, for tho purposes of beach improvements.

LADY LIVERPOOL FUND. There was a largo attendance at tho last meeting of the Lady Liverpool Committee, and members reported that tickets for tho euchro party and dance in the Pier Hall on July 28 wero selling well. At the last " packing afternoon " 165 tins of sweets and 857 tins of tea were filled, and next Monday members will again meet to continue this work. At the Presbyterian Church lasts Sunday memorial services in memory of tho late Private J. Campbell were conducted by the Missioner, Mr Biekerstaff, who referred to tho exemplary life of tho l«to soldier. There were large congregations at each service, all local organisations being represented. At the conclusion of the evening service tho choir Bang ''Crossing tho Bar." BABIES' HOSPITAL FUND. As a. result of a street canvass and jtunblo salo in aid of tho Babies' Hospital Fund, the sum of £6O lis was forwarded to Miss Tabart by Mrs E. Clark, honorary treasurer for tho local fund. The following gooda wero forwarded to the central depot:— 14 scarves, 4 pairs bed Bocks, I balaclava, 4 pairs mittens, 3 underpants, 13 pairs socks, 7 bed bags, 4 pairs underpants, 42 plugs, 5 pyjamas and 1 soldier's bag complete.
