HEATHCOTE NOTES.

[Fjiom Ouii Cot;RESPON'in;:fT,] The Heachcote Yniloy School Cornnut 100 mot on Tuesday evening; last. Mr Jamo3 Weir (chairman) presided. There were also present ' Messrs W. Grazier, W. Evans, L. J-'nit, E. ATHale, and W. RadelifFe. The head master in his report stated that the number or. the roll was 138 ami the average attendance JlB. Although there was no epidemic, there was a considerable nmount of sickness, especially amongst the younger scholars. However, tho attendance was rapidly improving. 'During the month the school had went forward a goodly number of made-up articles for tlie. Rim] Cross, including 17 handkerchiefs, 2 pillowcases, 32 washers v) facecloths, 3 tidy-bngs and 4 slinks. Tho committee decided to writo and express its appreciation of the work done. Amongst the correspondence from the Education Board were a schedule of the committee's duties, a .statement of incidental allowances for the year, arid a copy of tho board's by-lawn. The allowance was found to be over £7 short of that for the previous year. After considerable discussion, during which members expressed their views freely ami emphatically, the secretary was instructed to write to the hoard stating that the amount allowed was quite insufficient to moot ordinary expenses. That, after paying the caretaker, and fuel and water expenses, thero wist only 9s l month left, wherewith to find stationery and other school and committee requisites, pay for minor repairs, and keep tho grounds in order. Further, that the administration of a paltry few shillings did not warrant the monthly meeting of neven commit tec-men. Accounts amounting to 7s lid were passed for payment. The disposal of firewood was loft in the secretary's hands.

A letter was received from the Ladies' Bristol Fair Committee' signify ing its willingness to assist the committee in its asphalting scheme by n surprise packet campaign, which it would prosecute with the utmost vigour. Th>* committee expressed its gratitudo_ to tho Ladies' Committee for its promised assistance in a work which is urgely required for the benefit of tho school children, and which at present cannot possibly bo carried out owing to lack of funds.

Sixty pupils of the local school, with their teachers, attended the matinee yesterday afternoon at His Majesty's Theatre, and, needlessjto say, thoroughly enjoyed the war picturo. Interest was tonse throughout, for such an i»formativo and instructive portrayal of modern land warfare is an education in itself. The teachers wish to express their appreciation of the courtesy of the Y.M.C.A. officials in charj/c., and the completeness of tho arrangements mndo for tho accommodation and comfort of their little patrons.

Tho public farewell cocial being tendered to Mr and Mrs R. Connal in the Heathcote Club Hall to-night at 7.30 promises to be most successful. An excellent programme, including items by talented Christchurch musicians, has been arranged for. Admission will bo free, and ladies arc asked to bring refreshments.

At tho farewell social to-night a district welcome will be extended to IWr and Mrs D. Sword, who have been specially invited to ho present. Mr Sword succeeds Mr Connal as stationmaster.
