SCARCITY OF SAILORS.
Not for many years, eays the 'San Francisco Chronicle," has there been such a scarcity of sailo-3 and Ucensed officers in San Francisco as at present, and it is almost impossible to get. sailors for windjammers off-shove. Several reasons are advanced by shipping men for the dearth of sailors, cue of the principal ones being that there are so manv more sailing ships in service, due to high freights, that nearly all available men are now at sea. Another condition is the sailing of the salmon fleet to Alaska, which has taken several huur dred men from the local waterfront. On steamships the condition is the same, but the reason for the scarcity of men and' officers there is principally because so many have gone to the Atlantic. With steamers sold East, crews went out from here, and while wages are lower than on the Pacific, the bonuses offered by the companies operating to Europe are so largo that men make considerably more than running out of Pacific Coast port'"
