CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS.
DEPUTATION TO DEFENCE MINISTER. [Pek Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 17. A deputation waited on Sir James Allen to-day to protest against sondin<r conscientious objectors out of tiie Dominion. Reference was mado to tho fact that a number cf Mich objectors had been forcibly placed on transports, and it wns contended that the procedure was creating difficulties with somo of the authorities, also that two soldiers were required to look after one conscientious objector, which kept thousands of men away from the trenches The Minister, in reply, said ho realised that the problem was a very serious one. lie pointed out that provision was made in the Military Service Act for conscientious objectors to en|,;:i,f(. in non-combatant work. He had given instructions to the cnmy> commandants that any conscientious objector, provided tho authorities worn satisfied lie was not a shirker, should) ho given non-combatant, work.
