RICCARTON WHISPERS.

[Fbou OCB Cokempondknt.] At the meeting of the upper llaccarton branch of the Red Cross Society, held on -Tuesday, July 18, in the church schoolroom, Mr A. E. G. Rhodes gave an address to the members dealing with his visit to the English hospitals where New Zealand soldiers are being cared for. He also spoke of the active part taken by the women of England' in connection with Red Cross work. He asked' the members to continue sending woollen and flannel garments, as they were very much needed. # *

Mrs Walter Hill, of Christchurch, also gave an interesting address. She referred to the Large number of articles sent by the Upper Riccarton branch to the main depot. She had found that the branch sent on an average for the last six months 100 garments and othor articles per week. She urged those present to try to get others to come forward and do their share of the work for a great deal would have to be done in order to givo those who .wero fighting for the Empire every comfort. Musical items were contributed by Mr W. Lunn, and' the National Anthem was sung by those present. Votes of thanks were accorded to the speakers, and afternoon tea was dispensed by the members of the branch.

A presentation was made last Saturday afternoon at the Star Hotel, to Mr J. M'Cullough, who is leaving with the Fifteenth Reinforcements, Mr YV. Nidd presiding over a large gathering. In making the'presentation of a set of razors and soldier's outfit the chairman spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr M'Cullough, Mr T. Stokes endorsed the chairman's -remarks, and wislled tli3 guest a pleasant trip and a safe return. The • function was interspersed with songs and recitations, a very pleasant afternoon being spent. » *

The Lower Riccarton Girls' Bandage Club met on Tuesday evening, at the Town Hall, Clarence Road. The meetings so far have been a success., and at four meetings the club has made 371 bandages. Young ladies willing to assist are asked to come along next Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m. *' *

Mr Calvert, of Wainui Street, liasj*eceived a cablegram from his son, Corporal Reginald Calvert, who left with the Tenth Reinforcements, and is at present in France, saying, '' Riccarton toys all well." #■»

The Mayor (Mr John Brown) has received a telegram from the Prime Minister, inviting him to call a public meeting for Friday-, evening next, for tlio purpose of passing a resolution 011 the second' anniversary of the declaration of war. -The meeting will take place in the Town Hall at 8 p.m. * *

The weekly class of the Workers' Educational Association was held in the supper room of the Town Hall on Monday evening, when there was an attendance of sixteen. The subject under discussion was " The Rise of Foreign Trade.'* The council has consented to allow the class to be held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening next.

A very successful afternoon' concert and bazaar in aid of the Belgian Fund 1 , was held at the Upper Riccarton School on Friday, July 2'l. There were two stalls and ian afternoon tea room, and all were very quickly sold out. The sura of £lB 2s (id was forwarded to the secretary for the fund.

By defeating Fendalton by 11 points to 5, tlio upper Riccarton School football team is now assured of the Junior Schools' Shield for tlio second year in succession. Tiie game was very fast, and good' football was played by both sides. For Fendalton S. Gerard played excellently, being a tower of strength to his side, besides scoring their try. For Riccarton all played well, particularly the captain,' S. Carleton.

A concert in connection with. the Wliaronui School will be held in the Town Flail on Monday evening.

Tho Riccarton Burgesses Association mot on Thursday night, Mr R. W. Bniihtling presiding over a good at>tendance. The Tramway Board' wrote, stating that the association's request that tho penny section for out airs shoud be altered from the loop opposite tho Cricket Grounds to a little nearer the city, bad been granted. This alteration will enable passengers from the city to board or alight with much moro safety and convenience. It was decided to "hold the association's annual social on Thursday, at 7.30 p.m. # *
