Some tirno' in August the Bowling CXib intend to Hold a social evening. Th 0 function will probably be hold in the Pier Hall. Some Christchurch artists will assist in the musical part of the programme. NATIONAL RESERVE. On Wednesday evening the Reserve hfcld its weekly . parade, Lieutenant Ward in command. The usual miniature rifle shooting took place. The final of the fifth competition was fired off and Private J. Ainger takes the first prize, the second place shoot resulted in a tie between Corporal Drake. and Private D. Hood. The shoot-off will be fired this evening. Corporal Burmeistcr won the weekly "Hotty" button, with a score of 69, and Private D. Hood won the B grade button with a scoro of Gl. The following twelve men will represent the Reserve on the Brighton range this evening in a match against the Tramway Board Miniature Rifle Oub: Burmeister, Ward, Muiins, Kibblewhite, Drake, Sherwood, Ives, Houghton, Hawker, Harding, IJemplcman and Mann. Next Wednesday the sixth and final competition will be fired, also the final of the championship. On Wednesday the members of the platoon are requested to be on parade ac 7.30 p.m. sharp, 'the business being urgent and important. Next Tuesday evening some lady riflo shots will endeavour to form a Ladies' Miniature Biflo Club. Tho uiraal Red Cross collection realised Ss 6d. FIBS BRIGADE. Tha Fire Brigade held its annual dance and progressive eiu,hre fhrty in the Pier Ilal! on Wedne-day night, fifty couples being present. Amongst ihe~ vi-iting fireman were Superintendent Tyler. Firemen Pre storey (2), Coates and' Triggs. from Ranglora; Deputy-Superintendent Blake, City: and Brandur.nn Johniton, i'rom tho Railway Brigade. The lady's pr'ze was. won by Mis.; J one:?, and the men"? by Fireman A. Bndger. The hull \va< decorated with ..(lax, evergreens and flags. Dancing was indulged in till 2 a.m., m rnu-ie supplied by Mr Len. Salkold. Firemen Winter and' C. Stoker were MC.'s. A special tram conveyed tho visitors back to the city. The 13.' gad. will start practicing .next week for the Sumner Fire Demonstration. The schoolboys' team has been practising hard at tho hydrant coupling event for fome time. v LADY LIVERPOOL FUND. A most successful progressive euchre

party, orgnised by Mesdam.es Smith, Cowper and Cox, was held at Thompson's Camp, Bowhill Road, North Brighton on July 22, in aid'_ of tho local branch of the Lady Liverpool Fund. About 75 guests were present, but the rain unfortunately prevented a number coming from the city. The ladies' first prize was won by Mrs Mahar, the second prize bv Mrs Green, and the third prize by Miss Skoglund (West Coast). The men's first prize was won bv Mr S. Weston, the second prize by Mr Suckling, and the third prize by Mr Mathie. The ladies'" booby prize was won by Mrs Gahb and the men's by Mr Stevenson. All the prizes were given back to the fund, and were sold and re-sold, from which the sum of over £5 was realised. The ladies' prizes | were donated by Mesdames Peppier, Weston and' Cox, and the men's prizes by Mesdnmes Cowper and Snell, and the booby prizes by Mrs S. Weston. The refreshments were provided by the ladies connected with the fund, and there were no expenses whatever. In addition, the following gifts were received, the good-, being sold during the 'evening:—Mr W. Thompson £l, Mr B. M'Kenna ltK Miss Mina Smith 4s, Mrs Marks 2s 6d'; cake, Mrs Suckling; sweets, Mr Kincaid and Mr Bert Watson; a guessing cake, Mrs Peppier;] soaps and perfumes. Sir Stevens; spring flowers from North Island, per' Mrs Peppier: fruit, Mr and Mrs Pennell ; jam, Mrs Dear-ley; sauce, Mrs Lamb; fruit, Misses M'Dowell (Sumner); hand lotion, Mrs M'Dowell; fruit, Mrs Kincnid. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Duggan and Thompson Bros. Items were contributed by Mesdames Cowpar and Cox, Messrs R. Blank and W. Densem.

The takings for the evening amounted to £18: Three cheers .for the fund and' success to North Brighton brought t a very pleasant evening to a close. • RED CROSS AFFAIRS. A good meeting was held last Tuesday. The secretary wishes to acknowledge with thanks the following'donations:—: Mr Opie, £1; parcels of old linen from Mesd'aines Western, Cox, Edmonds, Florence, McKenna and Sheull. Total receipts for the' month are £8 6s 9d; and total of garments, etc., sent to the depot during July are as follows: 16 pairs slippers, 8 balaclavas, 84 scarves, 9 bed socks, 18 pyjamas, 14 undervests, 7 nightshirts, 46S roller bandages, 100 triangular bandages, 90 swabs, 2 diet cloths, 50 face cloths, 20 slings. 10 binders, 35 bottle covers, 6 und'erpants, 20 wringers, (j bundles old linen, 8 woollen material, 1 complete soldiers' bag. '• MOTHER'S UNION. The. members of the Mother's Union of the Anglican Church have forwarded thirty kits, each containing the following articles, to the British and Foreign Sailors' Society:—l writing pad and envelopes, 1 oake chocolate, 1 shaving stick, 1 pair socks, white and black thread, needles and buttons, 1 book. BAND OF HOPE.

The monthly meeting of the New Brighton United Band of Hope was held on Thursday evening in the Methodist Schoolroom. The llev C. Strand presided. , There.was a large attendance. Members of the Addington Band of Hope assisted with the programme, which was much appreciated by all present.
