BLOWN UP.
CHEMIST. AND ASSISTANT • INJURED. The chemist's vocation seems to be an exceptionally exciting one in Christchurch. A few days ago Mr S. Hewitt, whoso place of business is at the corner of Selwyn Street and South Crescent Road, Spreydon, was the central figure in an explosion, and to-day he was ncrain injured'. Soon after ten o'clock ho and his assistant, Mr Clemens, were distilling petrol, when the spirit exploded. Both men were blown into tho air and were somewhat badly burned. The assistant was taken to the General Hospital, where his injuries were attended to. Mr Hewitt's injuries are in the faco aud on the hands and neck, but these were attended to at the shop. Clouds of smoke were created by the explosion, and the Fire Brigade went promptly to the scene, but little damage was done to the premises.
