July 19 .General Smuts on July IB reports that enemy forces which endeavoured to operate against communications northward of Handeu and the Usambara railway had now been driven down the Pangani river, abandoning a field gun. The clearance of this, area was progressing satisfactorily. j On the southern shore of l.iike Victoria Nyanza a force under Brigadier Sir C. Crewe disembarked at Mwansa on tho night of Friday. The enemy evacuated tho town, after slight resisiauce, leaving rifles and a. portion of the supply column, and a gun iha'«had been taken into the country from the cruiser Konisberg. The majority of the German Europeans embarked on a steamship and fled southwards by Stuhlmann Sound, being pursued by armed lake vessels.
