SHILLING A DAY.
INCREASE FOR RAILWAY MEN. (Special to tho "Star.") WELLINGTON, April 29. The railwaymon of tho second or nonclerical division have been granted a shilling a day increase, to last for the period of the war, to be operativt retrospectively from April I. The Government has thus given the full concession asked by the men. Tho increase was due not onh" to the heightened cost of living but to the improved wages working conditions outside the service, causing tho Department to lose trained men. It is hoped that tho war bonus will enable the railways to nitrnc.i labour, enabling tho Department to got its pick of the best men. I am unable at present to state the Government's intentions regarding other low-paid grades of public servants. PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 29. Mr Massey stated to-day, after a Cabinet meeting, that tho question of an increase in the nay of railway men so far as it affected the second division, had' been partly settled. The matter of tho first division has yc r . to bo dealt with. Cabinet has decided not to make the arrangement public until further progress is made.
