RICCARTON COUNCIL WAR BONUS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l don't want to scold the Riccarton Borough Council, but I feel like our friend the Chinaman, and ask "What for?" The council has done the right thing in the wrong way. Why? What is it makes ■ a group of men want to do wrong when it is just as easy to do right?' They carried a resolution at their meeting last week that they' were willing to give the men Is 3d per hour if the men would work forty-eight hours per week. The award says that forty-four hours'shall constitute a week's work. Why break the award? The council employs twenty men that wouM come under this bonus. If they work forty-four hours it would permit of two more men being able to get a living. We have unemployed men galore. Why not stick to the award and employ more men? Borough councils are law-makers; how can they expect the people to respect their laws if they (the councils) treat other laws so lightly,? What is the object of .it ? I am, etc.. ' E, J. HOWARD. Trades Hall. April 29.
