ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL

NEW BUILDINGS WANTED. A deputation consisting of members or the Ashburton Borough School Committee, the Mayor (Mr K. Galbraith), Mr AY.' H. Collins (representing the North Canterbury Board of Education), Mr AY. J. iHekie, M.P., and Mr AY. Nosworthy, M.P., -waited on the Hon J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, during the stay of the second express, north at Ashburton on Friday evening in connection with the deplorable state of tlie Ashburton Borough bchool Duildings. . ■ ... ._ The chairman of the committee (Mr AV. G. Hillier) pointed out to the Minister that portions of the building iisd been erected for somo forty-five years, and -were in a very rotten state and most insanitary. It was stated that, owing to an outbreak of diphtheria, it had been found necessary to close the school for a fortnight, and a number of- parents had stated that they refused to send their children to the school when it opened. , rT> ~ , Mr AV. Nosworthy, M.P., informed the Minister that the building had served more than the-ordinary life of a school. . The Hon J. A. Hanan replied that he considered that they had made a very strong representation of their claim for a new school. Before he could move in the matter, it would be necessary for the members of the School Committee to bring the matter before the Education Board; and the board would in turn make representation to him. The application would then be considered when it came from the board, witli its recommendation'. Before a sum of money could be granted for the erection of a. new building, he would have to be satisfied that "the building would be placed in such a. locality as to sei-ve the children in years to come. They wanted to look ahead, and nave the building erected in the most convenient site to suit the population. AVhen the application came before him, it would be necessary to get a. sum of money put upon tire. Estimates for the new building, and he hoped that when the time came Mr Nosworthy would help him. + o get the Government to make the grant. A deputation! will bo appointed at the School Committee's mooting, held tonight (Monday), to wait upon the Education Board on AYednesday next in connection with the matter. MMMHMMHMMHMBHi
