ADDINGTON YARDS.

THE METROPOLITAN MARKET. TO-DAY'S SALE. [Puis thb "Stajr" Pigeon Exruasa.] All classes of stock were largely represented at the Addinfi-'ton metropoJita-n market to-day, eome divisions showing substantial increases compared with the opening sale of the year. The heavy entries of store, sheep and cattle can be attributed mainly _ not to attractive prices but to tbo very serious feed problems with which farmers and graziers in uenrly all centres of the province are faced. Even in the hill countries, whero thci drought did not prove as serious as on the plains, tbo shortage of grass is now beginning- to make itself felt, and this was evidenced at to-day's sa]e, inasmuch <t.a the yarding included drafts of store cattle from properties which herctoforo have sent nothing but fa is to the market. On the plains, tho recent showers of ruin have had tho effect of freshening tip pastures, but tho rainfall up to the present ; ha.s been totally inadequate for requirements and Beveral inches of rain are required to ensure a satisfactory autumn growth. The rain, however, has considerably improved the outlook for turnips and rape, which previously wore looking' far from promising. There was tho customary attendance-, all classes of the community being well represented,

FAT CATTLE. The yarding of fat cattl© was largely of medium qtiah.y, extra prime beef being the exception and not tho rule, whilst tho number of rather inferior animals was larger than usual. The day'B entry totalled -1 -2-t. head, compared with 338 at the last sale, 287 at tho Christmas sale, .185 on December 15, 314 on December 8, and 270 on .December 1.1 At, the last sale, it will be remembered, the market allowed a decided hardening tendency,- values advancing- to the extent of about half-a-erown per 1001b. To-day, bowever, the market lacked animation and prices eased considerably and values fell 2s Gd to ,1s per 100)b compared with last week's rates. Quotations are: Extra prime steers to £l9. Ordinary steers, £7 17s 6d to £l2. Extra, prime heifers to £lO 17s Cd. Ordinary heifers, £5 l»s to £B. Extra prime cows to £lO 17& 6d , Ordinary cows, £5 10s io £9. VEALERS.

VenJ calves of various grades and ages came forward in considerable numbers, but it was ngain noticeable that sellers' ideas of what constitute "vealers" are somewhat vague, inasmuch as many of the animal* penned might more reasonably have been included among the stores. Competition showed little if any change from last week, values being on about the same level. ' FAT LAMBS. There was a somewhat larger entry of fat lambs than last week, and the quality show s a steady decline in consequence of the con> tinned dry weather and shortage of feed. The exporters did more business than last week, but prices remained about the same, being equal to an average of 5Jd to 5Jd per lb ov ; r all, some sales being above and others below these figures. The range oi prices per head was: Prime lambs; 20s to 22s 6d. Medium, 15s to 19s 6d. \ Lighter, 12s to 14? 6d. Tilt- principal pales were:

FAT SHEEP. The yarding of fat 'sheep was rather inrper. eight races being filled. The quality was also a little better, but the bulk again consisted of eves. STOKE SHEEP. The yarding of .'■tore sheep was the largest Hoen at the Addingtou metropolitan market since lust, autumn, the short feed supplies* compelling many farmers to reduce their stock. Quite 75 per cent of the entry consisted of lambs of various grades, but tho bulk were of an indifferent class. The other sheep which came forward wore of a medium clap?. Forward lambs sold well, but' the demand for all other classes wa s distinctly wca-kor, prices being below the parity of recent markets.

The range of prices was: Good forward lambs, 13s to Us Scl. I'aJrlv good lambs, lis to 12s Gd. Medium and inferior lambs, 6s Cd to 9s Sd.
