LYTTELTON HIGH SCHOOL.

At the hreakmg-up ceremony yesterday afternoon in connection vrith the Lytteltou District High School, there was a large attendance, among whom were several members of the School Commiti.ee. Addressing those, present., the headmaster (Mr E. U. Just) said that 'the work done during the year had been a matter of satisfaction, as also had been the result of the pant examinations, which had been commented upon favourably by the inspectors. In the Sixth Standard forty pupils had obtained a proficiency pas?, and the whole of the remainder had been awarded competency certificates. MiUicent. Kennedy had ako been awarded first, place in the Girls' High School scholarships. Satisfactory progress had been made during the year in regard to the teaching of swimming, sixty girls and seventythree boys having been taught. In athletics, too, the name of the school had been woitluly npheld. and at the annual Public Schools' carnival the school had gained the greatest number of points, certificates being a.lso awarded to ten scholars. Success had also attended the efforts of the school at the River carnival last week, the Relay JRcca being won. In addition to this, first and third had been secured in the 'nng and high jumps, and third place in the 200 yds Championship. Touching on the war. Mr Just stated that over one hundred old boys were at tlie front, one of whom, Mr Norman Clark, had gained the I). 8. medui. The pupils during the year had raised a considerable sum of money for patriotic purposes, and upon resuming after the vacation- it was their intention to interest themselves in bandage-makine;. Short speeches were also made by members of the committee, it bing announced that the distribution of prizes would not take place until February next.
