LAWN TENNIS.
« «. ■ SOUTH CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. The annual meeting of the South Christchurch Tennis Club was held on Monday, Mr L. J. Berry being in the chair. The report stated that the past season had been one of the most successful on record, the membership having increased considerably. During the year several improvements had been effected and the pavilion had been enlarged. The club had enter*? two teams in the mens mter-oiub matches,. Both team 3 did fairly well, considering the absence of loading players with the Expeditionary Forces. As in former years the club was to be complimented on the excellent afternoon teas provided by tho lady members and thanks are specially duo to Miss Minnie Smart for her untiring efforts in this direction. The report was adopted. , It was reported that seven members were representing the club in the present European crisis, viz.: Messrs P. Berry H Marks, N. Sustina, A. Smith, J. A Jull, E. Hulbert and H. Key. Mr Sustm ß had been killed in action. A motion of sympathy was fussed to Mt Sustins'a relatives. It wu % ided to procure an honours board i and ,o have it suitably inscribed. i The resignation of Mr W. I. Deavoll, late 1 secretary to the club, wa 3 received with much regret, Mr Deavoll having been transferred to Wellington. It was decided to write to him expressing the club's hearty appreciation of his past services. The offer of Messrs Owen and Clarke to re-line the courts was accepted with thanks. It was decided to open the sea-son on October 9. _, . Officers were elected as follows:—President, Dr J. R. Thomas; vice-presidents, I Messrs G. T. Booth, E. C. Kirk. W. Smart, ! K T. Cowper, G. T. Batley and W. E. | Monday; committee, Mrs Steeds, Misses B. I Sharpe and P. Clemens and Messrs L. I Berry, A. Steeds, A. Dickson and W. Chappell; secretary, Mr F. Potter; treasurer, Mr H Gill; match committee, Miss JtYUeI mens and Messrs F. Potter and W. Chappell; delegate to Canterbury Lawn Tennis I Association and Spats Protection Assoaa- ! tion, Mr F. Potter. I A vote of thanks was accorded the j treasurer, Mr H. Gill. OPAWA CLUB. The annual meeting of the Opawa Lawn Tennis Club was held on Monday evening, Mr P. Menzies presiding over a good attendance of members. The report and balance-sheet, which were adopted, showed that the club had a credit balance of £*t Us 9d. The membership was eighty-two. Officers were elected as follow.—President, Mr P. Menzies; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Wilding, J. E. Garland, G. J. Smith, G. L, Bowron and W. H. Tisdall; committee. Misses Luoas, Menzies and 1 Bowron, Messrs Clayton. Tisdall and Charters; delegates 10 Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs G. OlHvieT and Harman. The opening day was fixed for Saturday, Ootober 9. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladies for providing refreshments during the year.
