The death of Alderman George Senior, Sheffield, b«=s closed the history of a man whose life was as true as the steel be madia. He was, perhaps, the most typical of Yorkshire steelmakers, who from small beginnings attaind to a position of public honour, but never lost the homeliness and bluffne-ss characteristic of his county. Ha began life as a nailrnaker's boy, and rose to l>o Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Master of the Cutlers' Company, a town trustee, Justice of the Peace, and an official in many other important departments. At nine years of age ho could beat any journeyman at making "' tenpenny nails." At the age of thirteen he was apprenticed, and afterwards became connected with Brown, Ellis and Bragge, the forerunners of John Brown and Co. In 1872 he launched out on his own account, was vorv successful, became rich, but remained bluff and outspokeiij and took a paternal interest m his workpeople.
