"FAIR DEAL FOR JAPS."
CAN'T ALTER THEIR COLOUR. HEARTS IN THE RIGHT PLACE. [PjiK Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 10. Discussing the question of tho invasion of the Pacific by the Japanese m relation to the * s "White Australia policy, Dr Uinta, Japanese frau© Coinnufisiorier, yesterday said: % 'I shall b© perfectly candid. Just as a tiger cannot change its spots we cannot alter our colour, but J. think you have already found our hearts are in the right placo. What the future has in store we do not know. " So far as this delicate qnestion is concerned we are in hopes that after the terrible war is over the overseas dominions of Great Britain will think more kindly of us than they have done in the past. It may be that Australian opinion on ' white' questions will change so far as we are concerned. Our inquiries in Australia have led us to understand that the attitude taken up is 'constitutional.' We regard that attitude as unreasonable ana unfair. Nevertheless, we do not bear ill will in consequence. '' We are offering the right hand of fellowship in trading relations and w& are in hopes that the present- Commission will "boar good fruit. There should he great benefit on both sides and so far as we are concerned we onlv want what your Prime Minister describes as a ' fair deal.' "
