NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
THE EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Ocr Correspondest.] The motor-car approach' to the beach has been laid' down and officially opened. A splendid timbered roadway is provided'between the end of the northern enclosure and the Surf Club pavilion, and runs some forty-five yards seawards on the beach. The work has been done without'expense to the borough and by th© good offices of the Automobile Association. The Wednesday evening's parade of the Citizens' Corps was well attended. There were over forty present, and excellent work was carriod on under the supervision of Lieutenant F. Ward. Six of the Hoy Scouts have been put • through swimming tests at the tepid ibaths by the honorary instructor, Mr W. A. Drake. Five swam the 100 yds in good time and entirely to the satisfaction of Mr Drake. The remainder undertook the quarter-mile, and finished in good conaHion. New Brighton, represented by Mr W. C. March, won the ■ first prize for six avireties of rosea at the rose and sweet pea show in Christchnroh. Whatever difficulties there may be in gardening in the New Brighton soil, there is no question that, rightly treated, results can be obtained here equal to anything anywhere. There are in the district many excellent gardens with rose blooms and sweet pea* in blossom equal to the 'finest.produced. There has been but one topic in New Brighton d'uring the week: How can the effort for the Belgian Fund be advanced? There never"lia« been, in the experience of the gala, stieh enthusiastic- endeavours to make the effort successful. Assistance has been offered from'the most unexpected quarters, and the spirit of help in evidence has been worthy of such a cause. The unfortunate break in the weather necessitating a postponement will in no wise interfere with the general arrangements. The event will now take place on Saturday, January 16. " Lieutenant Reg. Hopkins (Coast Defence Forces) has received instructions to report himself to the authorities at Treutham on January 15. He has the hearty wishes of New Brighton. The Mayor'* reference to the lieutenant's appointment on Friday evening at the Gala Committee, meeting was greeted! with hearty applause.
