Mr L. A. Stringer, J.P., presided at. a sitting of the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court to-day, when Harry Hillman, on a charge of failing to provide maintenance for an illegitimate child, of which ho was alleged to bo tho father, was remanded to appear a.t Wellington the followiug day 8 . A mooting of ladies was held this morning at Nazareth House to decide what steps should bo taken to assist, the nuns in carrying out tho various charities. Lady Clifford occupied the chair. As was pointed out at the meeting local charities, had been hard hit uTtiie way of financial support by the war, which at the same time made all the greater claim on their activities. It was decided to hold a. concert in the Theatre Royal on December 8, tie arrangements to be made by Miss M. Hayword. Lady Clifford consented to act as president of the committee m connection with the matter, and Mxa S. Barnett as honorary secretary, uckets were distributed amongst the ladies present, who agreed to use their best endeavours to effect tho sale of them. Miss Hay ward stated that an excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was being arranged, and particulars will be. announced later.
